12 May, 2008
The refurbishment of one of Western Australia’s oldest Catholic cathedrals received a boost recently with help from hydraulic technology and the skills of riggers.
Ten typical mistakes with compressed air systems
12 May, 2008 by John McNab*
Along with energy and water, compressed air is one of the most ubiquitous inputs into an industrial plant. Why then are we so aware of the need to conserve energy and water, but often so blasé about optimising the efficiency of our compressed air systems? Here, compressed air system innovator John McNab* offers tips for getting the best from new or existing compressed air systems, by identifying 10 common misconceptions about compressed air.
Smaller servomotor

Electricity supply — a key element of compressor installation
09 April, 2008
Compressed air systems can consume significant quantities of electricity, accounting for around 10% of Australia's power usage. An optimised electricity supply is an essential component of an efficient, cost-effective compressed air system installation.
Environmentally safe hydraulic oils - Part 2
19 March, 2008 by Glenn Johnson, Editor
In Part 1 of our story last month, we looked at the desirable features of a non-petroleum-based hydraulic fluid. This month we continue by looking at the advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic fluids based on vegetable oils
Hydraulically actuated diaphragm pump
12 March, 2008 | Supplied by: Williams Instruments Inc
Williams and Milton Roy have combined technologies to design a pump, blending the mRoy hydraulic bypass diaphragm design with the Williams V series pump. The result is the low volume, high turndown characteristics of a pneumatic drive coupled with the chemical containment and high pressure capabilities of a hydraulically actuated diaphragm.

Environmentally safe hydraulic oils - Part 1
20 February, 2008 by Glenn Johnson, Editor
Spills of standard, petroleum-based hydraulic fluids are known to kill marine life and contaminate soil. Environmentally safe hydraulic fluids are formulated to avoid these undesirable results
ATEX-compliant rotary vane pump
14 February, 2008 | Supplied by: AVT Services Pty Limited
Edwards' EM range of ATEX-compliant rotary vane pumps for potentially explosive environments is compact and gives vacuum down to 10-4 mbar. It allows operators in the chemical industry to comply with the European ATEX directive.
New compressors boost WA energy
14 February, 2008 by Carolyn Jackson, Editor
A recent upgrade to the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP) in Western Australia provides increased gas flow to local energy providers and features several turnkey air compressor packages
Billion dollar fuel package and hydraulic system
22 January, 2008
The fuel tank inerting system uses air separation modules with patented fibres. The air separation modules generate nitrogen-enriched air by removing the oxygen molecules from its air source and distributing the nitrogen to all the aircraft’s fuel tanks, thereby reducing the flammability of fuel vapours in the fuel tank and increasing the aircraft’s safety.
Maintenance and the efficient use of compressed air
21 January, 2008 | Supplied by: SMC Australia | New Zealand
Compressed air is often the highest energy cost for many businesses. Unfortunately, this resource is often seen as unlimited. It is therefore important that this valuable energy source be utilised efficiently, in all processes, at all times
Pressure measurement in liquid chemicals
18 January, 2008 | Supplied by: WIKA Australia
The Wika Hydral-Line pressure measuring instruments are designed for use in liquid chemicals distribution applications. It has been adapted to the special requirements of the process equipment and UHP chemicals distribution systems.
