HARTING for automation and robotics

Automation has been an ongoing trend with the rapid technological advancement around the world. However, as most automation processes still require a significant amount of human intervention, one obvious way to increase operational productivity and efficiency is to shorten the operational time with improved power, data, and signal transmissions — which brings us to the focus of current industrial automation enabler, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a core component of Industry 4.0.

IIoT refers to the interconnectivity between devices with the assistance of industrial mechanisms and applications. To be suitable for automation, a connection technology must be flexibly expandable, robust, and reliable — future-proof power, data, and signal connectors are crucial.

The core element of Industry 4.0 is connectivity, conjoining the apparatus and human through the usage of collected data and machine learning algorithms, allowing remote analysis and management of the gathered data. With advanced automation, manufacturing plants may be transformed into ‘Smart Factories’.

To achieve higher operational productivity and efficiency with minimal inaccuracies and uncertainties, the high speed, secured, and reliable traits of Ethernet may just be the key to IIoT. Ethernet optimises the automation market to a great extent due to its capability for high-performance with a simple connection.

Flexibility and productivity growth has been a consistent goal for industrial automation. Industrial automation combines industrial machines and information technology (IT), enabling an automatic analysis and visualisation of data to be used for further evaluations and forecasts. The amalgamation of industrial machines and IT motivates workplace optimisation, bringing about innovative business ideas. This merging can be done with the Ethernet protocol — the implementation of real IIoT.

The growth in data gathering, data processing and data mining creates the need for a more powerful infrastructure that focuses on big data through cloud systems. Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is the new node, leading Ethernet right to the sensors, at the same time focusing on miniaturisation and higher efficiency.

HARTING solutions for Ethernet

RJ45

Well-known for its unique shape, HARTING’s RJ45 is applicable to industrial settings and can be easily implemented without any particular tools. The main features of the RJ45 are its 360-degree shielding equipped for flexibility, and an exceptionally sturdy and secured snap-in clip. With this optimized design, the RJ45 is also used as an IP20 variant in multiple ways for demanding industrial applications and settings, as well as in office settings, building cabling systems, data centres, and control cabinets.

T1 Industrial – Single Pair Ethernet (SPE)

Single Pair Ethernet — an Ethernet development breakthrough in automation where the channeling of Ethernet is through a single pair of copper wires — provides the most economical essential infrastructure for Ethernet to enter the field level. The slim high-performance SPE cables enable smart sensors to transmit directly through a continuous Ethernet network directly to the cloud without interruptions.

Designed with simplicity in mind, HARTING’s T1 Industrial is easy to install with a high connection security. It is also shock and vibration proof (according to railway standards) with a 360° robust shielding, lowering the chances of failures and fault liabilities.

The T1 Industrial encourages a barrier-free communication with up to 10 Gb/s for automation networks, PoDL for remote power supply of sensors and actuators of up to 50 W, and at the same time being cost efficient through higher packing density, faster installation, higher flexibility, and weight savings.

HARTING’s T1 Industrial is accredited by the international standardisation committees ISO/IEC, TIA and IEEE, and recommended for use in M1I1C1E1, M2I2C2E2 and M3I3C3E3 environments. It is also suitable for all applications from IP20 to IP65/67.

ix Industrial and Mini PushPull ix Industrial

Revolutionising the world of industrial Ethernet and disconnecting from old connections, HARTING’s miniaturised Ethernet interface, the ix Industrial, is the key to solving future challenges posed by Industry 4.0 and the IoT.

Based on industry standard IEC 61076-3-124, the ix Industrial is space-saving and encompasses a more robust plug-in connection while still producing Cat. 6A performance for 1/10 Gb/s Ethernet at the control level.

HARTING’s ix Industrial was awarded the Best of Industry Award 2018 and winner of the Automation category.

M8 and M12 circular connectors

Tested and certified, HARTING’s M8 and M12 circular connectors’ D-coded systems are designed for transmission rates of up to 100 Mb/s, with X-coded system cables for applications of up to 10 Gb/s transmission rates. The main features of the M8 and M12 circular connectors are IP protection, plug-in safety, sturdiness, vibration resistance, and EMC safety.

Miniaturised, sturdy and highly protected, the M8 connectors are appropriate for harsh industrial IP65/67 environments. With the use of superior industrial data cables, M8 circular connectors possess excellent transmission with Cat. 5 performances of up to 100 Mb/s according to IEEE802.3 and high EMC characteristics.

The M12 X-coded system cables are appropriate for system applications with high data volume. The main features of the M12 circular connectors are their Cat. 6A performances of up to 10 Gb/s transmission rates, and their sturdy design for harsh industrial IP65/67 environments. The M12 also comes with the PushPull locking system, saving time and space for users, instead of the traditional torque wrench connection method. With the availability of the PushPull locking system, the M12 circular connectors are the ideal solutions for environments with space constraints.
