The Victorian Minister for Planning, Rob Hulls, has granted AGL Energy Limited (AGL) planning approval for the proposed 330 megawatt Macarthur Wind Farm, one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and one which will be world class in terms of size, scale and latest turbine technology.

"The planning approval is an important step in the development phase of this project and in the development of AGL's portfolio of renewable energy generation assets," AGL managing director Paul Anthony said.

"There are still a number of steps to be taken before AGL is in a position to make a final investment decision. However, AGL is delighted with achieving this first step in the process and with the Victorian government's positive disposition towards renewable generation, in particular the recent implementation of the VRET Scheme."

AGL expects to announce a final decision on the Macarthur Wind Farm project within the next 12 months.
