The record-breaking 45,000 km EcoFuel World Tour, which started in Europe in October 2006, will arrive in Sydney on 20 February 2007.

This is the first natural gas-powered automobile to attempt a Guinness Book of World Records trip through five continents without interruption or returning to the starting point.

The EcoFuel-powered, 80 kW, 2.0 L Volkswagen Caddy is highlighting the advantages of natural gas as an environmentally friendly and economical alternative to petrol or diesel.

Endress+Hauser is a co-sponsor of the EcoFuel World Tour. The company works closely with researchers and developers of alternative eco-friendly fuels and is a supplier of measurement instrumentation and solutions for the oil and gas industry.

"As a company, we are aware of our responsibility regarding the environment. Using natural gas as a fuel makes perfect sense. This is why we gladly support the EcoFuel World Tour," said John Immelman, managing director, Endress+Hauser Australia.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) is considered an environmentally clean alternative to petrol or diesel fuel. In Australia, CNG has established its credentials as an alternative transport energy source based on its superior environmental performance in terms of exhaust emissions and the availability of abundant natural gas reserves. CNG is made by compressing methane (90% of natural gas is made up of methane) extracted from natural gas.

The Volkswagen Caddy EcoFuel, which entered Australia through Darwin, will travel to Alice Springs, Mt Isa, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney and leave Australia at Melbourne.
