An international Siemens-led consortium is building a 750 MW supercritical-steam coal-fired power station at Kogan Creek, near Chinchilla in Queensland. The $1.2 billion project is scheduled to come online in September this year and will be the largest single-block power station in Australia.

The Kogan Creek power plant is designed to ensure minimal impact on the environment. Its steam cooling system with air-cooled condenser uses up to 90% less water than a conventional power station.

Australia's cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station is being constructed with an extensive range of sophisticated instrumentation from Endress+Hauser, which will supply Kogan Creek power station with over 2000 instruments valued at $750,000.

Under a "˜Total Instrument Concept' adopted by Kogan Creek power station, all the package suppliers, such as coal handling and water treatment utilities, worked off a harmonised instrument list thereby minimising the quantity of spare parts, reducing the cost of commissioning stock, simplifying training and contributing to major savings.

Among the thousands of instruments supplied by Endress+Hauser are Promag 53P electromagnetic flowmeters used in the bidirectional measurement of feed water, Deltabar S differential pressure transmitters for steam flow and various applications, Cerabar S pressure transmitters for process pressure and Liquiphant vibrating fork level limit switches. Endress+Hauser's local offices will provide support and ongoing product training.
