The Wieland Electric SAMOS PRO MOTION expandable safety controller is a programmable safety controller with the additional functionality of motion monitoring up to Cat 4 and SIL 3/PL e.

Motion monitoring is achieved using six TÜV-certified function blocks. The SDI block provides safe direction for rolls, gates or machines, while SSR and SLS function blocks provide safe speed range and safety-limited speed respectively.

The SSM function block supports a safe minimum speed such as a jog or tooling and setup mode. The SLP block provides safety limited position for rotating or linear axes, while the Standstill function block provides safe standstill monitoring for commissioning or maintenance.

Safety monitoring is achieved using sensors, depending on the safety category and application. The sensors can be proximity sensors or safe HTL encoders.

Typical safety motion monitoring applications include machine tools and metal working, woodworking machines, packaging machines, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), high bay storage, cranes and hoisting, lifts, wind turbines, centrifuges, and rotary tables.
