All-in-one automation
With the introduction of its MOVI-C range, SEW-EURODRIVE has taken the next step in automation technology. The efficiency and integration of the modular MOVI-C family cuts costs and improves performance in the food and beverage, logistics, and automotive industries, and in baggage handling at airports. In short, the opportunities to save arise wherever automation and drive technology help keep the wheels of industry turning. A key component in the system is ‘MOVIGEAR performance’, a recent addition that represents the next generation of decentralised drive and automation technology.
Operations managers the world over share a common problem in the never-ending contest to stay at the forefront of their respective industries. How can they find new efficiencies and continually cut costs while simultaneously meeting shorter deadlines and optimising production output? Every advantage gained helps in this quest.
MOVI-C, a single-source automation system for all-in-one solutions provides this very advantage, whether the need is to implement single-axis or multi-axis applications, complex motion control, or customised automation solutions.
There are four fundamental components to this modular system: drive technology; engineering software; control technology; and inverter technology, both central and decentralised.
Decentralised drive technology
The modular MOVI-C automation system offers a range of components for use in decentralised systems, applications and system topologies. A key component in the range is the recently introduced MOVIGEAR performance drive system.
MOVIGEAR performance combines a permanent magnet synchronous motor, gear unit and inverter in one drive unit. It can be used in a wide range of applications — anything from positioning tasks to dynamic materials handling technology with speed-controlled axes.
The new drive unit is characterised by its lightweight, compact design and high overload capacity of up to 300%. By achieving the highest motor efficiency class IE5 to IEC TS 60034-30-2 and maximum system efficiency to IEC 61800-9-2, MOVIGEAR performance surpasses conventional solutions, cutting energy costs and reducing the carbon footprint wherever it is used.
Like the other gearmotors in the SEW-EURODRIVE range, MOVIGEAR performance can be configured for use in wet zones. With optional surface protection ratings ranging from OS1 to OS4, the units are ideal for washdown areas in food-production facilities that require stringent levels of hygiene. If necessary, an extreme-corrosion option (XCO) is also available.
MOVIGEAR performance is available in two sizes and three power classes. The 200 Nm torque version operates up to 0.8 kW rated output. The larger 400 Nm versions operate at up to 1.5 kW or, with extended continuous torque, up to 2.1 kW rated output.
To assist with maintenance, SEW-EURODRIVE’s emerging DriveRadar technology allows operators to optimise and plan maintenance and repair activities for their drives. Built-in sensors convey information that enables digital recording and analysis of the operational data. Oil temperature, vibration, motor temperature, motor current and other data points are also received, and further analysis enables prediction of changes in condition and other maintenance-related events.
In addition, DriveRadar enables the monitoring of key parameters to detect trends and see any unusual results. This helps avoid potential system failures.
Engineering software that saves time and money
MOVISUITE software is used for planning, commissioning, operation and diagnostics. It provides end-to-end engineering for all components in the MOVI-C system, from inverters to user-specific drive technology. By speeding up these engineering processes, MOVISUITE saves operators time and money.
The faster speeds of the engineering process are achieved in two ways. Efficient design of the software coding leads to efficient data management, and the intuitive and user-friendly human interfaces save time. MOVISUITE has a modern look and feel, and workflows are optimised for both specialist and occasional users, who are able to familiarise themselves with the software quickly and easily.
The software is all-encompassing. It enables operators to intuitively commission and set parameters of the MOVIDRIVE modules and system application inverters. They are also able to configure and create IEC programs for the MOVI-C CONTROLLER and run diagnostics. Project management functions are integrated, as are context-sensitive help functions.
Cutting complexity with control technology
Competitive advantage for manufacturing and other industries comes in many forms. In the case of MOVI-C CONTROLLER, it is realised through reduced programming outlay and greater flexibility. Operators have the option of creating their own programs to suit their applications, thereby enhancing their competitive advantage. Examples of this approach include bespoke PLC functions and specific rules.
Based on the MOVIRUN software platform and MOVIKIT modules, the control technology is available in four different performance classes, standard, advanced, progressive and power. MOVIRUN is used for parameterisation and programming at start-up and MOVIKIT is used during operation.
Inverter technology to control any motor
The MOVIDRIVE application inverters control and monitor synchronous, asynchronous and linear motors, both with and without encoders. They are modular, with single-axis and multi-axis variants available. They are rated up to 180 A and, as a single-axis application inverter with power supply connection, up to a rated output of 315 kW. Energy savings are obtained through the partial-load operation and standby functions.
Safety is built into all units. The basic unit features safe torque off (STO) for the highest-risk areas of performance level e (PLe). Safety option cards extend the functionality of the unit, with more than 15 safety functions to select from. The availability of these option cards reduces costs by including only those functions that are actually required for the application.
Putting it together
SEW-EURODRIVE’s MOVI-C is an end-to-end solution incorporating planning, commissioning, software, electronic control and monitoring devices, mechanical drives and gearmotors. It can be used in a wide range of applications, including horizontal conveyors used for intralogistics and parcel logistics, the food and beverage industry, the automotive industry, and in baggage handling at airports.
In all these applications, and others like them, MOVI-C keeps operations managers one step ahead in their quest to gain a competitive advantage and lead their respective industries.
