Baldor has introduced a line of motors certified to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards within the IECEx Certified Equipment Scheme. This will allow the company to meet customer needs in the international market with motors that are designed and meet the requirements to be used in hazardous or explosive atmospheres.
The initial offering includes the Ex dI/IIB Gb T* for explosive gas atmospheres, and the Ex tb IIIC T* Db IP6X for explosive dust atmospheres, where T* represents various temperature codes. These motors cover the NEMA frame ranges of 180-449T and IEC 112S-280H, and are similar to Baldor’s Class I and Class II Division 1 motors.
To achieve the IECEx certification, Baldor designed the motors to comply with the IEC standards and submitted the product for testing by an accredited IECEx test laboratory. The product also had to undergo an independent review for certification by an IECEx certification body, and the company will be required to maintain a quality record on each motor shipped. The objective of the IECEx system is to facilitate international trade in equipment for use in explosive atmospheres, while maintaining the required level of safety.
Industries that can utilise these motors include oil refineries, chemical processing plants, underground coal mines, grain handling and sugar refineries.
