Panasonic has released its lightest and smallest rugged handheld computer to meet the needs of Australian mobile field workers. The 3G-ready Toughbook CF-U1 is suitable for use where conditions are harsh, space is confined or ultra-portability is critical. The Toughbook CF-U1 has a sunlight-readable 5.6" wide screen for easy viewing outdoors, can withstand a drop of up to 1.2 m and is tested against shocks, vibration, dust, water, humidity, altitude and temperature extremes.

The CF-U1 incorporates the Intel Atom processor, claimed to be the smallest and lowest power consuming notebook processor, proving more powerful than a standard PDA. The CF-U1 is suited to a range of diverse industries where workers require lightweight mobility. This includes construction, utilities, mining, warehousing and manufacturing; and mobile operations, such as police (particularly motorcycle riders) and emergency services and roadside assistance.

The CF-U1 is a fully customisable device, with options including: a camera for image capture; fingerprint reader and smart card reader for security; a magstripe reader that allows credit card payments to be taken in the field; and a bar code scanner or RFID for asset management. In addition, the optional GPS supports navigation or locating below-ground assets such as pipes when used with a GIS application.

The Toughbook CF-U1 has a battery life of up to 9 h and operates with dual hot-swappable batteries, giving users maximum productivity and uptime through the convenience of changing batteries without shutting down the device.

Fully sealed in its magnesium alloy chassis, the unit provides a lightweight solution yet still remains extremely rugged. In addition, it is claimed to be the first Toughbook to integrate a solid-state drive with no moving parts, making it even more robust and reliable, and use a full-function Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system.
