USyd's re-engineered MPE program accredited by Engineers Australia
Re-engineering the Master of Professional Engineering (MPE) program has earned the University of Sydney full accreditation from Engineers Australia. The industry peak governing body said the program will help meet the growing demand from industry for qualified engineers.
The university now offers fully accredited programs in Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Power and Structural Engineering.
“We created the program with a view to producing qualified engineers from a broader pool of applicants, graduates with knowledge and skills in related disciplines, particularly science,” said Professor Archie Johnston, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.
“We also wanted to create opportunity for engineers to cross seamlessly into different engineering fields and for overseas engineering graduates with non-accredited qualifications to enhance their qualification and practise engineering in Australia.
“This accreditation means the qualifications of these graduates will be recognised internationally through the Washington Accord of the International Engineering Alliance. It will open up a world of job opportunities,” Professor Johnston said.
New graduate Michelle Liu completed an undergraduate science and engineering degree prior to undertaking the MPE program. “The masters program has not only provided me with the additional technical skills required but the management and leadership capability to progress my career,” Liu, now a risk and safety engineer, said.
“We strongly encourage educational institutions to seek accreditation of this class of engineering masters program,” said Steve Finlay, Executive Director of Engineers Australia, Sydney Division.
“Graduates are fit to enter practice as professional engineers and enjoy the recognition, mobility and professional-development benefits that an accredited qualification ensures.”
