Future auto industry bailouts subject to Productivity Commission review

Ian Macfarlane, the new Federal Industry Minister, says talks about GM Holden’s future in Australia have been “very positive”.

Macfarlane toured GM Holden’s plant in Elizabeth last week prior to discussions with Holden Managing Director Mike Devereux, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and SA Opposition Leader Steven Marshall.

“All parties have shown a willingness to take part in a genuine dialogue on the future of one of Australia’s major manufacturing sectors,” Macfarlane said.

“[The] talks are part of a series of discussions I am holding with all parts of the industry because the issues it faces are not confined to just one manufacturer and any solutions will be sector wide.”

Any future action on the industry will be guided by a Productivity Commission review that will consider issues of productivity and sustainability for the industry, Macfarlane said.

“I want to ensure that I have all the information before I recommend any decisions and plans for the auto industry’s future,” Macfarlane said.

“I am determined to ensure that car manufacturing in Australia will be able to become self-sufficient. This is a goal that everyone would share and I believe it is achievable.

“I am very privileged to have toured one of Australia’s first-class manufacturing facilities. [These] events give me confidence that we have the vast and important skills we need to deliver for the auto industry and the broader economy.”

Macfarlane will meet with Toyota and Ford in Melbourne this week to further discuss the future of Australian car manufacturing.
