Advantech to host free Windows Embedded Standard 7 workshop

Advantech is holding a free Windows Embedded Standard 7 hands-on, two-day workshop in Perth. It is designed for people building a 32-bit X86 or 64-bit X64 based device with Windows 7 that would like better control over the operating system’s image size.

Jason Tolley will deliver the workshop. Tolley is the principal of ROK Technology, an official Microsoft Embedded Training Company, and has many years of embedded knowledge in various flavours of Windows Embedded.

Attendees will learn about included features, control over the operating system’s image size and how to build an embedded image quickly. It is suitable for digital signage, kiosks, factory automation solutions, POS solutions, test and measure and monitoring and control devices.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Target Analyser Probe (TAP)
  • Image Build Wizard (IBW)
  • Image Configuration Editor (ICE)
  • Windows PE Deploying a raw image to bootable media
  • Distribution shares
  • Packages and Templates Customising the operating system image in both IBW and ICE
  • Adding features and services, customising the user experience
  • Configuring the Embedded Enabling Features (EEFs) such as the Write Filters to enable operation from solid state media
  • Adding third-party drivers and applications
  • Configuring the image for remote access and security and cloning
  • Tools such as ImageX and SysPrep

The workshop will be held on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 August at the Microsoft Azure Room, Suite 301, 100 St Georges Terrace, Perth.

Attendees need to bring a working Windows laptop with its power adapter and must have Remote Desktop Client installed and 20 GB of free HDD space for loading of the virtual PCs with the development tools installed. In addition, participants will need a minimum of 2 GB of RAM to get acceptable performance from the virtual machines used for the labs. A basic knowledge of computer hardware terms and competency with the Windows user interface and desktop operating system are required.
