Small-scale wind energy

Nevada-based Windspire Energy has announced a partnership with Australian-based AllSafe Energy Efficient Products to be the sole distributor of the Windspire wind turbine in Australia.

The Windspire is a vertical axis turbine designed for urban and suburban areas. Standing just 9 m tall, the design of the rotor allows it to operate silently. Through the use of monitoring software, users are able to track energy generation from the device in real time.

The turbine can generate up to 1.2 kW per hour, 24 hours a day, and like similar output solar systems is grid-connected, enabling surplus power to be sold back into the grid.

The turbine works most effectively in low to medium wind conditions, from 8 km/h upwards, and is expected to retail at a price comparable with similar output solar PV systems.

The Windspire-AllSafe partnership will now begin the process of certifying the Windspire for the Australian market, making them eligible for Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), with an expected launch later this year.
